Reading
Chirnsyde will provide an environment rich in language and which sets high expectations for literacy and the children’s use of language. Pupils will spend time with stories, literature and other texts which will enrich their learning, develop skills and promote enjoyment of Reading. Spoken language has particular importance in the early years and play-based learning will be applied with systematic development and learning of skills and techniques for reading, including phonics.
We follow pedagogy, methodology and use resources as recommended by Glasgow Improvement Challenge’s Literacy for All to ensure a variety of approaches are used within the teaching and assessment of Reading across the school, with active activities developing collaborative working and independent thinking and learning featuring within Reading planning. Our reading teaching embraces relevant, real-life and enjoyable contexts which build upon children and young people’s own experiences. Where appropriate and effective the use of technology is used to support pupils’ developing Reading skills. Reading Strategies are systematically planned for and taught using Before, During and After Strategies, with Literacy for All resources appropriate to stage clearly displayed in the classroom to support this process.
